When you’re on vacation, several modes of transportation will get you to your destination as quickly as possible, but during that time, you may miss out on all the beauty around you, too focused on getting to the end spot. This doesn’t happen on a moped! When you rent a moped in Hawaii, you get to take in the sights and sounds of the glorious Hawaiian Islands. You can appreciate more of what Hawaii is all about when cruising in the open air. You may be surprised at how easy they are to get around on, even for the inexperienced moped or scooter driver.
A moped is like a light motorcycle. They are made for one person to ride only. They go about the same speed as a bike, but slower than a scooter and therefore do not have as many restrictions attached to it as other motor vehicles. They cannot go any faster than 45 mph on the roads and are limited as to where they go. In Hawaii, they can go on all roads legally except the H1, H2, H3, H201, the Pali Highway (Route 61), and the Like Like Highway (Route 63).
You can rent a moped to tour the islands in style! With a moped rental, Hawaii is easy to explore. You can take in and appreciate all the island has to offer while getting to your next destination to explore. Hawaii is very moped and scooter friendly, and it is a popular, easy way to get around. You can rent them just for the day or up to a week.
Mopeds are for single-person use only. If you prefer a two-seater, try a scoot coupe! These super fun vehicles are three-wheeled mopeds and look like little cars, but you steer it like you would a moped or scooter. The scoot coupe can go up to 30 mph and is something fully enjoyed by anyone trying to get around on the island.
If you prefer something a little more advance, you can opt for a more powerful scooter rental. You must be at least 21 years old with a motorcycle license to be able to rent a scooter. Of course, this isn’t something everyone has, and you can get the same Hawaiian outdoor experience with a moped or scoot coupe. You can even rent two-seater scooters if you prefer. A motor scooter also has fewer restrictions as to what roads it can go on.
Whether you are staying on the Big Island, Oahu, or Maui, there is something available for anyone wanting a different way to explore.
Generally, if you can ride a bike, then you can ride a moped! No prior experience on a moped or scooter is necessary, but you must be at least 18 and have a valid driver’s license to be able to rent and ride a moped. With the scoot coupe, the driver must be 18 with a driver’s license. The company will give you lessons before you drive off and make sure you are completely comfortable with the moped before leaving you to it. They usually provide helmets, bike locks, and tour maps. You must follow all the road traffic laws and signs as normal. Again, if you want a scooter rental, you must be at least 21 with a motorcycle license.
After you feel comfortable enough to drive, the island is your oyster! You will be given a map and tips of tours to take around your island, but here are some of the best sights Hawaii has to offer.
On the popular island of Oahu in particular, you will probably start your tour by the famous Waikiki in Honolulu. From Waikiki, you can travel around the Hawaiian landmark Diamond Head. A tour around the Diamond Head crater will take you on a three-mile cruise along the coast. A hike up Diamond Head can be done in about two hours, but if this isn’t your thing, a moped tour is just as fun. From there, your moped tour can take you to the picturesque Hanauma Bay. From Waikiki, it is a 12-mile coastal journey, allowing you to appreciate the island’s natural beauty before you arrive at this gem that is known as Hanauma Bay.
This volcanic cone, which you can see beautifully from a helicopter tour in Oahu, is now a ring-shaped ecosystem for some of Hawaii’s most precious wildlife. You may choose to do a snorkeling tour here and witness the amazing reefs and fish that call Hanauma Bay home. From there, you can pass the Halona Blowhole, watching nature shoot water 30 feet into the air, and then the famous Sandy Beach. A bit further up the coast is the Makapu’u Lighthouse. Further on from that along the coast is Waimanalo and Kailua Bay where you can relax on one of Oahu’s most beautiful beaches before going back to Honolulu/Waikiki or traveling up to the North Shore.
If you want to travel up to the North Shore, be prepared for a long day as it is a 120-mile trip along the coast from Waikiki as the moped cannot be taken on the highways. However, it will probably be the most scenic trip you have ever taken! Alternatively, if you prefer staying close to your hotel, Pearl Harbor is only a ride through Honolulu and past the airport. Here you will learn more about that solemn day in American history and visit the memorials.
There are plenty of options on the other islands too. On the Big Island, you can rent a moped, scooter or motorcycle to get to the remarkable Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Travel to the Captain James Cook Monument and experience Kealakekua Bay where the famous Captain Cook docked to be met by the natives. The island of Maui also has plenty on offer. You can even get a guided moped tour that takes you to all the coastal hot spots.
Although all mopeds, scooters and scoot coupes have lights and flags making it easy to be spotted by motorists, for safety reasons it is best to ride them during the day. Plus, you will see more of the sights in the daylight!
If you choose to rent a moped, or even a scoot coupe or scooter, you will experience Hawaii like never before. It is okay to take a car to get to destinations, but a moped will get you to see the real Hawaii, making it about the journey too and not just the destination. Moped or scooter rentals are easy to find and easy to drive, even if you never had experience before (for the moped). With a moped rental, Hawaii is easy to tour, whether it be on the Big Island, Oahu, or Maui. Take the opportunity to appreciate the natural beauty of Hawaii. Consider one to rent during your trip to one of the tropical islands!

I was a little nervous at first so they let me take it twice around the block to get comfortable. They offered a refund if I was not comfortable but by the second go around I was getting there. So glad that I did, such a fun time.

As a group we took out some mopeds to explore the beaches for a day. So much fun and a great way to explore the island at a slow pace.

Felt a little goofy in the helmet at first, but my partner and I just had one more thing to laugh about throughout the day.
